Commonly known as aconite buttercup or fair maids of Kent, Ranunculus aconitifolius has dark, glossy green, lobed foliage with toothed margins, much like an Aconitum. In late spring to early summer, pure white saucer-shaped flowers with a yellow centre open from red buds on upright, branching stems — a charming detail that adds to its appeal.
This non-invasive Ranunculus is summer-dormant — after flowering it dies back and remains dormant through the summer months before reappearing the following spring. Do bear this in mind and take care not to disturb the roots when it is dormant.
Grow in humus-rich, fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. It is well suited to woodland areas and for under-planting trees and shrubs. Native to Central Europe.
