This wonderfully architectural plant has large palmate leaves tinged bronze in spring and autumn. During the summer the leaves are green, it has bronze stems and panicles of pale pink flowers from July – August, which fade to white. It produces a tap root that requires, deep, fertile and consistently moist soil. Plant it near streams and ponds or in areas that don’t drain quickly, for instance partially shaded or shaded, clay soils along woodland edges. Rodgersia can be planted in full sun but if the soil becomes too dry the leaves may scorch. The pollinator friendly, statuesque flower heads stand high above the foliage and the attractive seed heads remain well into autumn, the old flower stems can be left over winter to provide structure.

It does not need to be staked and will do best in a sheltered area where it is protected from drying winds. If you have the space Rodgersia ‘Irish Bronze’ looks spectacular when planted ‘en.masse’. It is an attractive companion to other moisture loving perennials such as ferns, Aruncus and Astilbe, Lamprocapnos, Hosta, Brunnera and Primula to name but a few.
