This vigorous perennial has strap-like green foliage with attractive red margins, and produces clusters of large, creamy yellow flowers throughout summer. Despite its exotic appearance, it is fully hardy and will survive all but the harshest of UK winters.
Roscoea prefers humus-rich, fairly free-draining and slightly acid soil in a shady or partially shaded position. It looks wonderful in a woodland setting, on shady banks and slopes, or in a flower border. A word of caution: Roscoea emerges very late in spring — take care not to disturb it by accident before it appears.
