Although close in form and habit to Salvia nemorosa, S. amplexicaulis produces taller spikes with larger individual violet-blue flowers arranged in rings along strongly branching purple stems. Like many sages, its fresh green foliage is rough to the touch and aromatic.
Ideal for adding drama and vertical punctuation to a summer border, its intense jewel-like colour draws the eye and combines beautifully with lime greens, oranges, and deep pinks. Bees and other pollinators love it, making it an excellent choice for a wildlife garden, and it cuts well for arrangements too. Hardy and easy to grow, it prefers a sunny or lightly shaded spot in free-draining soil with some moisture.
