Salvia forskaehlei

Widely known as 'Indigo Woodland Sage', it bears long spikes of purple-pink hooded flowers with white splashed lower lips, held on narrow branching stems above a bushy rosette of large, slightly coarse, green leaves. Native to N.Turkey and the Balkans, it grows naturally on dry hillsides flowering from June to September.

This robust and easy to grow perennial will clump up quickly in the right conditions to form attractive and naturalistic ground cover. Useful as low maintenance mass planting, it is also salt spray resistant and can cope with a coastal location. In spring, remove faded flower stems. It grows best in a reasonably rich, free draining soil that retains some moisture in the sun or partial shade.
