Masses of white flowers with red lips are carried on slender stems with fragrant, small green leaves. Native to Mexico, this sub-shrub flowers throughout summer and well into autumn, attracting bees and other pollinators in their droves.
Hardly shy and retiring, it demands to be planted where its striking flowers can be best enjoyed. It combines beautifully with purples, blues, and pale pinks. 'Hot Lips' prefers a light, free-draining soil in full sun and is ideal for coastal locations and gravel gardens.
Rated H5, it is hardy through most of the UK even in severe winters, though it may be less reliable on open or exposed sites and in central or northerly locations. Plants grown in containers will be at greater risk in hard frosts and are best moved to a sheltered spot over winter.
