Commonly known as Gentian Sage, Salvia patens 'Guanajuato' is a tall, striking form producing large, bright blue, two-lipped flowers on slightly fuzzy green stems clothed in triangular leaves with distinctive brown blotches. The intensity of that gentian blue will stop you in your tracks.
Long-flowering and great for the back of a border, it will sing out all summer. Half-hardy, it benefits from the protection of a sunny wall in a courtyard or urban garden, and is sufficiently tolerant of salt air to be a good choice for coastal locations. Very attractive to bees. Do not cut back until the frosts have finished. In colder gardens, the tubers can be lifted and stored over winter like dahlias. For best results, grow in free-draining soil in full sun, avoiding winter wet.
H3 — hardy in mild areas of the UK (-5°C to -10°C). Lift tubers and store frost-free in colder regions.
