Salvia × sylvestris ‘Mainacht’ — May Night — produces an abundance of densely crowded, deep violet-purple flower spikes on a compact plant with tidy, aromatic, sage-scented dark green foliage. The dense vertical spikes provide excellent structure at the front of a border, acting as a foil for looser flowering forms.
A classic cottage garden plant, much valued for the richness and intensity of colour it brings throughout summer. Bees and other pollinators love it. To extend flowering, cut faded stems back just above a pair of outward-facing unflowered shoots to encourage a second flush. Thrives in any light, moderately fertile, free-draining soil in full sun.
