An aromatic, herbaceous perennial, Salvia verticillata forms bushy clumps of green leaves with stems of violet-blue flowers in summer. Massively attractive to bees in particular, it thrives in free-draining soil of any pH in full sun and is well suited to gravel, coastal and cottage garden schemes.
Hardy down to -15°C, it does however need to be placed away from cold, drying winds and prolonged winter wet.
Commonly known as Whorled Clary or Whorled Sage, the aromatic foliage makes it a pleasure to grow in pots on the patio or close to windows and doors.
