Tall and architectural, Silphium mohrii — known in its native North America as Prairie Rosinweed — is becoming a firm favourite among garden designers for its profusion of pale yellow single flowers that dance in the breeze on fuzzy, branching stems.
Flowering from late summer into autumn, it is a wonderfully useful perennial, bridging the late-summer gap when earlier-flowering perennials have finished and autumn ones are yet to begin. Its naturalistic, prairie-garden good looks suit a wide range of planting styles, from informal cottage to natural landscape. Easy to grow and low-maintenance, it thrives in full sun in free-draining soil but will also cope with light shade. Its nectar-rich flowers are a magnet for bees.
