A charming member of the iris family, Sisyrinchium idahoense var. bellum is native to damp meadows and prairies of the western USA. Its grass-like, blue-green leaves are topped with star-shaped, bright blue flowers with a distinctive yellow throat, appearing from late spring into early summer — and reliably attractive to butterflies.
Semi-evergreen and hardy to around −10°C, it thrives in fertile, neutral to alkaline soil that is moist but well-drained. Versatile and easy to place, it suits rock gardens, pond margins, patio containers, and cottage or courtyard gardens equally well. Mature clumps can be divided in spring, or left to self-seed gently.
