Few plants earn their place in a garden quite as effortlessly as Stachys byzantina 'Big Ears'. Named for its remarkably large, softly felted leaves, this is a plant you'll want to reach out and touch — the silver-white foliage has an almost woolly texture that catches the light beautifully and provides year-round interest as an evergreen ground cover.

Through summer, furry spikes of small purple-pink flowers rise above the foliage, attracting bees and adding a gentle vertical note. But it's the leaves that steal the show, smothering the ground with a luminous silver carpet that suppresses weeds and sets off neighbouring plants to perfection.

Naturally at home in a cottage or informal garden, 'Big Ears' is equally at ease edging a path, softening the front of a sunny border, or planted beneath roses to conceal their bare stems. Once established it becomes genuinely drought tolerant, making it an excellent choice for gravel gardens too. Grow in full sun in well-drained, reasonably fertile soil.

It combines beautifully with Rosa, Salvia, Allium, and Geranium.
