Commonly known as Mexican Feather Grass, this compact, clump-forming grass produces a dense fountain of very narrow leaves and stems, with arching, feathery flower heads that emerge pale green before fading to a warm buff. To see them billowing in the breeze is like watching horses toss their manes.
It looks spectacular grown in large drifts, mixed with perennials such as Achillea, Helenium and Aster, highlighting their distinct forms. Its architectural quality suits urban and courtyard spaces as well as more informal gardens, and being tolerant of dry soil it is an excellent choice for a gravel garden. In spring, before new growth emerges, comb through the clump with a dog comb to remove faded foliage — it works a treat. It thrives in free-draining, fairly fertile soil in full sun.
