The large, deep lavender-blue flowers of this exceptional Stoke’s Aster are quite unlike anything else in the mid to late summer border. Held upright on stocky stems, the slightly shaggy blooms are intense in colour and impossible to walk past — there are very few flowers that can match them for sheer depth of hue.
Plant ‘Mel’s’ in pride of place at the front of a sunny border or in a prominent container where it can be properly admired. Evergreen through mild winters, it bulks up steadily in average to moist, reasonably well-drained soil on a south or west-facing site. Bees cannot get enough of it.
