Plants are dispatched in growing condition and may not be in full flower. If too tall to pack safely, we may cut them back — this helps them establish more quickly. Read our Mail Order FAQs.
Strobilanthes rankanensis produces curved, trumpet-shaped deep blue flowers with a delicate network of grey veins, held on upright, branching mid-green stems above shrubby, glossy oval leaves. Native to China, this species is hardier than most Strobilanthes and produces a sustained haze of deep blue flowers from midsummer into autumn — a quality that deserves to be far better known.
It is well suited to underplanting shrubs in a border or planting in drifts in a naturalistic scheme, and makes effective ground cover in both settings. Tolerant of full sun and partial shade, it is adaptable to most soils, including heavier ones, though it dislikes extremely free-draining conditions.
