Succisa pratensis

Commonly known as Devil’s Bit Scabious, Succisa pratensis bears lilac-blue pincushion flowers that gently bob and weave on wiry, branching stems above rosettes of oval green leaves. It is a superb plant for wildlife, attracting butterflies, bees and other pollinators in good numbers.

This naturalistic British native looks beautiful planted in drifts through a moist wild meadow or bog garden, but can tolerate drier soils too. In a border, its airiness and grace create a see-through screen of glowing blue dots in autumn that draws the eye through the planting. It thrives in full sun in moist soils, tolerates winter wet, and can cope with drier conditions in partial shade.
