Symphyotrichum novi-belgii ‘Algar’s Pride’ is a tall, elegant New York Aster bearing delicate sprays of single, slightly ruffled lavender-blue flowers, each with a yolk-yellow centre. Flowering for weeks on end from early autumn, it adds drama and intensity to the back of the border at a time when many perennials are fading.

Slightly informal and open in habit, it combines brilliantly with taller Rudbeckia and ornamental grasses such as Calamagrostis. To carry the same lavender-blue nearer the front of the border and draw the eye through the garden, Aster × frikartii ‘Mönch’ makes a beautiful companion. Like other New York Asters, it prefers a fertile, moisture-retentive soil in sun or light shade.

  • Care Guide:

    Divide clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigour — any time after flowering but spring is preferred. Cut back stems after flowering in autumn. Taller selections may require staking. Symphyotrichum novi-belgii cultivars benefit from good air circulation to help prevent mildew.
