Symphyotrichum 'Vasterival' has become one of our most popular Michaelmas Daisies for its height and flower hue. Come September, masses of lilac-pink single flowers, each with a yolk-yellow centre, erupt from the deep pink buds that stud the ends of its dark, multi-branched stems.
Perfect for the back of the border, it is also a great way of adding soft punctuation and movement to the middle, as its openness allows plants behind to be seen. Hardy and versatile, it is as much at home in a cottage garden as a prairie planting scheme mixed with ornamental grasses. The pink hue combines brilliantly with so many colours — from yellows to purples and dark reds — ensuring your autumn is full of colour. It performs best in sun or light shade in a fertile, moist but free-draining soil.

Care Guide:
Divide clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigour — any time after flowering but spring is preferred. Cut back stems after flowering in autumn. Taller selections may require staking. Symphyotrichum novi-belgii cultivars benefit from good air circulation to help prevent mildew.
