Thalictrum delavayi, commonly known as Chinese Meadow Rue, is a native of China with delicate lilac-purple buds that burst open to reveal cream stamens through summer. The handsome, pinnately divided foliage is a soft blue-green.
A striking architectural plant for the middle to back of a border, it attracts bees and other pollinators and combines beautifully with grasses and other tall perennials. It thrives in humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered position; staking may be needed in exposed spots. Note that T. delavayi emerges very late in spring — mark its position to avoid accidentally disturbing it.
