Commonly known as Argentinian Vervain, Verbena bonariensis has a tall, columnar habit with branching stems that bear clusters of tiny violet flowers throughout summer. Native to South America, it self-seeds freely, ensuring a reliable presence year after year.
Butterflies and bees are irresistibly drawn to it, making it a fantastic choice for wildlife gardens. Rated H4, it is hardy through most of the UK, though it may suffer some stem dieback in harsh winters in colder gardens and plants in pots are more vulnerable. Verbena bonariensis loves a position in full sun and well-drained soil; gravel gardens, sunny wall-side beds, and borders are all ideal.
