Said to be the largest of the British native pansies, Viola lutea — the Mountain Pansy — is a robust perennial, native to upland meadows, rocky pastures and limestone grasslands across Great Britain, Ireland and much of western Europe, from Spain to Poland. It is a plant of thin, well-drained soils and open situations, which goes some way to explaining its toughness and adaptability in the garden.
Fragrant and much admired for its soft yellow flowers with distinctive black veining, appearing from June to August above neat mounds of small, heart-shaped leaves. Low maintenance and easy to grow in any good soil in sun or partial shade, it is an ideal choice for underplanting shrubs and perennials, its clear pale yellow catching the eye and highlighting neighbouring flowers. It works beautifully too for edging a path through dappled woodland. A quick tidy of faded flower stems after the initial flush will encourage further blooms.
