Athyrium niponicum var. pictum 'Apple Court'
Height x Spread: 50cm x 50cm
This is a member of the Painted Lady Fern group and has soft, silvery grey fronds with a purple mid-rib and crested tips. Suited to partial or full shade in fertile, moisture retentive soil, it benefits from having plenty of leaf mould added to the soil and never being allowed to completely dry out.
This is a deciduous fern, the best leaf colour appears in the newly emerging fronds which darken as they age. Spreading slowly by means of short rhizomes, they can be lifted and replanted in early spring as they emerge. The effect of seeing them ‘en-masse’ in the dappled shade under trees is quite magical. The silver tones to the fronds seem to reflect the available light making the area appear brighter.
