Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue'
Height x Spread: 25cm x 25cm
Despite its compact size 'Elijah Blue' delivers real impact in the garden with its intense silvery-blue needle-like foliage, packed into tight rounded cushions like the electric blue bristles of a shaving brush. The foliage colour is most striking in spring and early summer, before delicate blue-green flowers develop, followed by brown seed heads.
A gravel garden is perfect for showcasing this ornamental grass, especially planted in groups. Its unusual colouring mixes brilliantly with purple foliage plus reddish-orange grasses such as Carex and Anemanthele lessoniana. For an interesting contrast of rounded blue-grey forms, combine it with Euphorbia myrsinites. To achieve vibrant colour it needs to grow in a free draining soil in full sun. Comb through the grass in spring to remove faded seedheads and leaves.
