                                    Verbena macdougalii 'Lavender Spires'
Height x Spread; 150 - 250cm x 10-50cm
An easy to grow, resilient herbaceous perennial for a sunny spot in any pH, this Verbena is highly attractive to bees, butterflies, moths and other pollinators as its flowers are rich with nectar.
The tall, slim stems have rough textured narrow leaves and many branching heads of purple flowers which makes it ideal for the middle or back of the border. Best in full sun and any pH, it needs moist but well drained soil, but becomes drought tolerant once established. It is also hardy down to -15 degrees Celsius as long as the soil does not become waterlogged in winter.
Flowering from July to September, or beyond if the conditions remain favourable. You could cut back spent stems and divide in spring as necessary. However, if left in place the spent stems will be clothed in attractive seed heads which could provide a source of food for birds later in the year.
Ideal for coastal, cottage, informal, prairie and gravel gardens as well as beds and borders.
