In the village of Laverstoke, between Whitchurch and Overton, is a gem of a garden which has a special place in the hearts of Rob and Rosy Hardy.
Created from a blank canvas 25 years years ago, around a three sided cluster of farm buildings, it has been transformed in to a glorious garden and arboretum, by Carolyn and her husband Julian.
Ever the generous hosts, they invited us to visit them after work on a beautiful Summer evening. It had been raining earlier in the day during what was to become one of the wettest Julys on record, but as we arrived the sun came out and bathed the garden in soft golden light. Teeming with bees, the entire sight fills you with a sense of gentleness and well-being.
Over time Rosy has helped Carolyn create some unexpected little gems to discover as you explore the garden, one of which is a shady spot which is predominantly red. Alstromeria and Hemerocallis vie for your attention while sweet peas scent the air with heady fragrance and white clematis create a billowing backdrop. The first word on most peoples lips when they discover this little vista is 'Wow'.
The Clematis, of which there are many, were all looking extraordinarily lush on the day of our visit and appear to revel in the different aspects around the house.
Every where you look there are beautiful plant combinations, unusual trees and flowers reflected in the water of the ponds.
There is a conservatory at the end of the main frontage to the house, which is home to some beautiful exotic climbers and possibly the happiest Bougainvillea I've ever met.
As we sat in the garden Rob and Rosy presented Hilary, our Nursery manager with surprise gifts to celebrate her 30 years with Hardy's and three rich and indulgent Chocolate cakes, enough to ensure every member of staff could partake.
It was the perfect setting for such a celebration and our host's generosity made the evening one to remember.
The garden is open to the public by appointment and you can take a look by following the link to their website. I defy any gardener to come away without a head full of ideas to try at home.
