Description

Althaea armeniaca

Height x Spread: 100-200cm x 50-100cm

A tall, airy, branched herbaceous perennial from Eastern Europe to Central Asia. This plant needs to be placed in full sun and should not be overfed. Doing so would make it liable to flop and placing it in areas of shade will make it lean towards the light. It produces many five petalled rose-pink flowers with a darker centre from mid-summer into autumn which are a magnet for pollinators, in particular all types of bees.

Hardy to -20C, this is a tough specimen that produces a deep tap root and will self-seed about happily. Over time a single plant will establish itself as a clump. A fantastic addition for a sunny wildlife garden or in areas of quite poor soil and fast drainage. Unlike some other plants in the family Malvaceae it is not troubled by rust.
