Astilbe 'Sprite' (simplicifolia hybrid)
Height x Spread: 30cm x 30cm
An early flowering dwarf form of this easy to grow stalwart of moist and shady gardens. Masses of frothy pale pink flowers are clustered onto 30cm stems over dark green foliage. Any pH soil is fine as long as it has consistent moisture. This does not mean however that this plant enjoys waterlogged conditions.
Hardy in UK gardens, ignored by deer and rabbits and a huge draw for butterflies, this easy herbaceous perennial is a welcome addition to wildlife, cottage, informal, waterside and shady woodland schemes. Its diminutive stature also lends itself to container planting and it is great in smaller gardens where space is at a premium.
Lift and divide every four years when all growth has died down, to ensure the plant doesn’t get congested. A mulch of composted matter in Spring will help the plant deliver the best display of flowers later in the year.
