Bergenia 'Wintermarchen' AGM
Height x spread: 50cm x 100cm
This is a small leaved form of a popular low growing evergreen perennial. The foliage is narrow, glossy and often slightly twisted to show both faces of the leaves. In April and May red stems emerge above the leaves, bearing clusters of deep pink bell-shaped flowers.
Hardy all over the UK, this little plant is quite unfussy about growing conditions as long as there is access to some moisture. Perfect for ground cover, it can be used to stabilise banks and slopes. Plant it under trees and larger shrubs or use it in beds and border edges. It’ll slowly grow to create a reasonably sized clump and makes an excellent weed suppressant and helps prevent soil erosion.
Mulch in autumn and remove old flower stems and older/damaged leaves in spring. This little plant is an excellent source of pollen and nectar for beneficial insects.
