Eryngium bourgatii Picos Amethyst ('Mackpam'PBR)
Height x Spread: 50cm x 30cm
As the popularity of Eryngium continues unabated, Picos Amethyst really stands out from the crowd for its stunning deep blue petite flowers, each distinguished by a ruff of long jagged bracts. But even before the flowers appear on sturdy reddish blue stems from late summer into August, its spiny green foliage with bold white markings draws the eye, providing interesting contrast and texture with surrounding plants.
Hailing from the Spanish Pyrenees, this mediterranean plant performs best in full sun with a fairly fertile to poor, free draining soil. A striking and architectural choice for a gravel or coastal garden, why not include it in your cutting garden too, although you may be tempted to leave them standing over winter as the seedheads look beautiful kissed with frost.
