Vernonia angustifolia × missurica is a tall, upright perennial native to the central USA, providing intense late-season colour alongside exceptional pollen and nectar for bees and butterflies. Deer and rabbit resistant due to its bitter taste.
The stout stems carry lance-shaped, deep green leaves with white-hairy undersides, and large, well-branched flowerheads of up to 60 disc florets each — ranging from rich magenta to deep purple. Regular deadheading will keep the display going well into late autumn.
It thrives in rich soils from moist but well-drained to moisture-retentive, tolerating periodic flooding — making it ideal for heavy clay that doesn’t dry out in summer. Happy in almost any sunny position regardless of pH. Works beautifully in prairie, cottage, wildlife, bog, and waterside gardens.
