Iris lazica
Height x Spread: 30-50cm x 50cm
Native to North East Turkey and Georgia, this tidy evergreen, clump forming rhizomatous perennial starts flowering in February and continues until April, giving a much needed boost of intense colour to the garden. The flowers are up to 8cm wide and the base of the falls are white with blue veining, the rest of the petals are rich purple or lavender blue. The flowers can be cut when in bud and bought into the house where you can enjoy them as they unfurl.
Happiest in dappled shade and neutral to alkaline, moist but well drained soil. Ideal for planting in front of a warm wall or in a sheltered location which has a little shade and a leafy soil. Unlike its close relative Iris unguicularis, it dislikes being baked by the sun. Cut back any spent flower stems and remove drying leaves as they appear. established clumps can be divided from mid summer into autumn.
