Maurandya barclayana
Height x Spread: 150cm x 150cm
This tender climber is normally grown as an annual. However, it can be grown under protection where it will grow as an herbaceous perennial and could reach 300 – 500cms.
Originating in Mexico, this super pretty climber has tubular flowers in pink, purple or white, up to 5cm long, in spring and summer. It can be propagated by seed and softwood cuttings and also has adventitious buds enabling it to be used as scrambling ground cover. This type of planting could be invaluable for holding slopes and banks together. It does well in dry, sunny or partially shaded sites with sheltered conditions and can also be used to great effect in hanging baskets.
Very attractive to butterflies it would adapt well to use in coastal, urban, cottage style and tropical/ exotic planting schemes.
If you are growing it outside, collect seeds or take soft tip cuttings to overwinter in a frost-free place.
