Commonly known as the 'Honey Bush', it sports dark red-maroon flower spikes in late summer, over large saw-toothed pinnate greyish-green leaves. This luxuriant architectural plant is mostly grown for its exotic looking foliage.
A great backdrop to other plants in a border, but it also makes a great specimen container plant for a sunny courtyard. In more sheltered areas, it can be left outside if protected well from cold, drying winds and too much winter wet. In other areas, grow it in a pot and move it inside a greenhouse from late autumn until the frosts have finished. It performs best in a fairly fertile, well drained soil that retains some moisture in full sun or light shade.
