Salvia 'Phyllis' Fancy'
Height x Spread: 175cm x 100cm
Originating in the Mediterranean, this superb Salvia has downy leaves and stems. White flowers that take on a lavender hue as the season progresses, emerge from long racemes of purple calyces. The lanceolate foliage is aromatic.
Deer and drought resistant, it makes an impressive show from June into late autumn but must be grown in very free draining soil. This plant is usually hardy in sheltered conditions but if it's likely to be exposed to frost or cold winds it will need winter protection. Deadhead spent racemes to prolong flowering and in winter reduce the height to 30-60 cm to avoid wind rock. Do not take it any lower. Mulching around the plant could be helpful, but do not remove any of the old growth until the new stems are establishing and there is no more chance of frost. The plant can be pruned lightly in late May to improve its shape. If growing in a container it should be moved into a bright, frost free environment to overwinter.
Ideal for tropical or exotic, wildlife, sensory, coastal, urban, cottage and informal beds and borders as well as prairie style schemes.
