Allium schoenoprasum (Chives)
Height x Spread: 30cm x 30cm
Whilst some grow chives purely for the culinary use of their stems, they are ignoring the wonderful display of pale purple pom-pom flowers they put on in summer. Tough and hardy, just cut them back after their initial flowering for a further flush. They will bulk up quickly but the bulbs can be separated easily.
Ideal for a sunny windowbox near the kitchen door or a herb garden, they are also great for edging a well-drained border or path, attracting bees in their droves. They make a delicious combination with oranges and reds (try Geum 'Scarlet Tempest') plus whites, pinks and blues. Best planted in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.
