Semiaquilegia ecalcarata
Height x Spread: 20cm x 20cm
Delicate, nodding lilac flowers appear during spring, held above low growing mounds of green Aquilegia-like foliage. Growing naturally in damp, mossy woodlands in China, this short-lived perennial self-seeds profusely - just remove unwanted seedlings.
It is often used for edging borders or along paths, but is also a good choice for a woodland garden, due to its naturalistic form and ability to thrive in partial shade as well as sun. Alternatively, plant it beneath roses or shrubs to disguise naked stems. It will flourish in any reasonably good soil in sun or light shade.
