Symphyotrichum cordifolium 'Chieftain'
Height x Spread: 130cm x 60cm
Tall, airy and ever so slightly informal, from September into October and beyond, 'Chieftian' is packed with masses of small pale lilac-blue single flowers carried at the ends of dark green multi-branched stems. This exuberant display is perfect for the back of a herbaceous or cottage garden border, the gentle pops of colour glowing in the softer light of autumn.
Easy to grow, tough and hardy, it can even tolerate salt laden air but may need staking in more exposed areas. Try combining it with taller ornamental grasses such as Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' to help support it. It prefers a fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun or light shade.
