Symphyotrichum lateriflorum var. horizontale — commonly known as the Calico Aster — is a compact, low-branching perennial with rigid stems and dark, narrow leaves. From late spring through to early autumn its striking foliage structure and colouring provides an excellent foil for surrounding plants, before starbursts of small white flowers with reddish-pink centres cover the plant for weeks through autumn.
Most effective when grown with ornamental grasses or planted in groups towards the front of a border, it also makes an attractive low informal hedge — an unusual and eye-catching use for an aster. Highly attractive to bees and butterflies, it thrives in full sun in free-draining, fertile soil, and will tolerate partial shade.
