Symphyotrichum novi-belgii 'Sophia'
Height & Spread: 90cm x 60cm
This long-lived perennial hails from the USA. and flowers profusely in late summer. The foliage is mid green and lance shaped, and the small double flowers are intense hot pink with a yellow centre. The centres change to a red tone once pollinated and are loved by bees, butterflies and other pollinators. The flowers close in low light levels and will open again when the light improves.
Best in full sun or partial shade and humus rich, free-draining soil. Asters can be affected by mildew if placed in still, humid conditions so ensure good airflow to the plant. Happy in any soil pH as well as being salt and drought tolerant once established.
Ideal for use in coastal, cottage, wildlife, informal and prairie gardens, this plant is also excellent for cut flowers and large containers.
New growth emerges from the base so cut it down in spring, or after flowering if you wish to prevent wind rock. Pinching it back in late May will encourage side shooting and as a consequence, more flowers. It will also slightly reduce the overall height of the plant and help create stronger stems.
