Eurybia x herveyi is one of those plants that every gardener should know about. Between August and September it produces masses of starry deep lavender blue nectar rich daisy flowers on branching wiry stems, each studded with a yellow centre. Highly sought after by butterflies, bees and other pollinators, once pollinated its centres turn red.
Apart from the rich floral display, the best bit about this reliable, hardy perennial is that it thrives in dappled or partial shade in a fertile, free draining soil, challenging growing conditions that we are often asked to recommend plants for. Tolerant of more sun too, it combines well with Nepeta govaniana and ornamental grasses such as Molinia caerula subsp. caerula 'Heidebraut'.
