Height x Spread: 50cm x 40cm
Previously classified as a Silene, this plant has basal rosettes of dark green lanceolate leaves and tall drumstick like heads of small maroon pink fragrant flowers with blue anthers and wine red bracts.
Best in full sun and rich, moist but well drained soil, it is not unlike the smaller Armeria or thrift but requires different conditions. Originally found in Bulgaria and the Balkan peninsula, this rarely seen plant is hardy down to -15 degrees C.
Bees and butterflies are drawn to its bright colour and wonderful scent and it can even be used as a cut flower.
