This is a new introduction from Japan that is a variation of Saxifraga fortunei. The foliage is glossy, evergreen and arranged in a basal rosette. Each leaf is toothed and often has a fine red margin. The flowering stems are brick red and hold the flowers above the foliage, branching near the tip. The flowers are star shaped and creamy white to white with a deep yellow or orange centre.
Flowering from autumn into winter, this is a superb plant for extending the interest in a part shaded spot. It also looks beautiful in pots, which would allow it to be safely kept in more alkaline gardens. Irrigate with rainwater in summer if your water supply is alkaline.
