Sambucus nigra 'Golden Tower' ('Jdeboer001'PBR)
Height x Spread: 300 cm x 100cm
This Elder that has a narrower silhouette than most others in the genus. Lime green foliage flushed with yellow from spring to late autumn is complimented with fragrant white flowers in summer, followed by glossy black berries that are adored by birds.
It grows particularly well on alkaline chalky soils. Preferring moist but well drained fertile conditions, it is happy in full sun or part shade and is very hardy once established. In a shadier site the foliage is shown off to great advantage and can make a potentially gloomy site very beautiful.
Ideal for use in smaller urban gardens as well as walled gardens, this plant is an ideal addition to wildlife friendly and waterside schemes. It's narrow growth habit means it can be used in both formal and informal settings and the scent of the flowers will add a sensory highlight in early summer.
For best results prune every 3-4 years to improve the shape and foliage.
Do not plant in areas that have been shown to contain honey fungus or verticillium wilt.
This perennial is extremely harmful if consumed. Berries are edible if cooked.
