Nepeta cyanea
Height x Spread: 80cm x 50cm
N. cyanea has unusually large flowers for a catmint. From mid to late summer it produces tall and plump flower spikes of deep purplish blue blooms arranged in whorls or rings around the stem over bushy clumps of mid green scented foliage.
The slightly informal habit suggested by its gently arching stems is perfect for more naturalistic planting schemes such as a coastal or gravel garden, its nectar rich flowers enticing the bees and butterflies in. Like many other Mediterranean climate plants it grows well in any free draining soil in full sun and once established it becomes drought resistant. Plant it with yellow forms of Kniphofia and Scabiosa plus Alchemilla venosa for a zesty combination.
