Hylotelephium × mottramianum ‘Herbstfreude’ is an iconic late-season perennial whose large, flattish clusters of pale pinkish-green buds open to small, pale pink flowers that deepen to dark pink and red as they mature, held on sturdy grey-green stems with gently toothed leaves. The display evolves continuously from late summer through to winter.
The nectar-rich flowers, produced from August to October, are particularly attractive to bees. Even after fading to dark brown, the seedheads look beautiful highlighted by frost. Easy to grow and drought tolerant, it thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in full sun, and also performs well in containers.
