Bistorta amplexicaulis 'Blackfield' PBR
Height x Spread: 80cm x 50cm
Bistorta are becoming more popular and deservedly so. 'Blackfield' is a particularly striking cultivar, its deep red bottlebrush flowers dance in the breeze on willowy stems from mid summer deep into autumn. The foliage is attractive too, near heart-shaped in form and dark green. In its preferred conditions, full sun and a fertile, moisture retentive soil, it will happily spread sideways suppressing the weeds as it goes.
Its naturalistic good looks work well in moist meadow plantings as well as prairie and informal cottage garden schemes where it needs little maintenance, a hair cut in spring should suffice. Build on its glorious depth of colour by combining it with other jewel colours such as purples, oranges and pinks. For an interesting mix of flower form, plant it with Succusa pratensis, the spikes and bobbles look great together. Pollinators love it too.
