This plant is often described as a sub shrub due to its growth habit, whereby the stems become woody at the base, but it can be cut down to 5cm and will regrow into a very tidy plant.
Tall, deep purple flower stems carry spikes of tiny pink flowers during the summer and into the autumn. The stems are clothed in finely divided deep green leaves and stand above a low mound of foliage
The tall flower spikes on this plant are at their best in early summer. It is a woodland plant and as such is best in a partly shady border with a reasonable soil.
