In late Spring and early Summer this plant will reward careful placement with open sprays of the purest white flowers over soft, glossy, divided foliage. To achieve this spectacular show, place the plant in sun or preferably part/dappled shade in rich soil that is consistently moist but well drained.
Butterflies with be drawn to the foamy flowers and the colour shines out in the dappled shade. Divide the rhizomatous roots in late Winter or early Spring every three to four years to maintain the vigour of the plant and provide your garden with new plants. This plant looks great planted in large swathes as well as single specimens.
Perfect for pondside, cottage, informal, wildlife and woodland gardens this plant is disliked by rabbits and deer so is a useful introduction in gardens that are predated. Astilbe have no special requirements regarding soil conditions apart from ensuring they never go without moisture.
Pairing with Astrantias, Hostas, Ferns, Ammi majus and Thalictrums will ensure you create a peaceful dreamlike space. If you don’t like to keep the straw coloured seed heads, the flowering stems can be cut down at the base.
