Iris ensata 'Variegata'
Height x spread: 60cm x 60cm
Iris ensata, commonly known as Japanese Iris, have a graceful beauty and elegance all of their own. 'Variegata' is widely admired not only for its velvety deep purple flowers with a reddish hue and distinctive splash of yellow at its centre but also its bold foliage, mid green sword-like leaves neatly edged in cream , which is perfect for lifting more sombre areas of planting.
Preferring a moist soil and full sun to part shade, make space for it in your bog garden or along the margins of a stream where its silhouette can be reflected to perfection. Once its midsummer floral display has finished, you can cut the stems back for neatness as the foliage will continue looking good for some time, a vibrant backdrop to late summer flowers such as Astilbe, Lythrum, Sanguisorba and Bistorta.
