Salvia 'Amistad'
Height x Spread: 120cm x 60cm
Since its introduction in 2012, 'Amistad' has become deservedly popular for its willowy spikes of large deep papal-purple flowers on almost black stems and soft green foliage, that appear from late May until stopped by the first autumn frosts.
It looks simply stunning planted in drifts through a herbaceous or mixed border, adding weaving vertical punctuation and dramatic colour that really draws the eye. Much beloved by bees and designers alike, it really sings out against other strong jewel hues such as deep pinks, oranges and yellows. It suits loose naturalistic schemes combined with ornamental grasses and daisy-type flowers such as Rudbeckia, but is also suitable for coastal gardens. Frost hardy, it needs protection in harsh winters. A spot in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil will suit it best.
